Comparative Oncology-Steps Closer to Finding a Cure!

Heading to the Start Line!

It’s no surprise that finding a cure for cancer is a cause very dear to my heart, and I support many incredible organizations that are dedicated to finding a cure for canine cancer. So when I found out that VPI Pet Insurance was hosting a walk in Denver that would benefit the Animal Cancer Foundation, I was all over it!

Founded by Dr. Gerald Post in 1999, the Animal Cancer Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization and is dedicated to finding a cure for cancer! The Animal Cancer Foundation supports research that advances the prevention and treatment of cancer for people and pets, and focuses specifically on furthering the research of comparative oncology, which is the study of naturally occurring cancers in humans and companion animals.

Isaac walked for his friend Luke.

Dogs get cancer for the same reasons that humans do, and each year millions of dogs in the U.S. are diagnosed with naturally occurring cancer. Since they share our environment, our pets develop similar forms of cancer that are characteristic with human malignancies. Because the clinical behavior and treatment of cancer in pets and humans is quite close, comparative oncology proves invaluable in the research and development for certain drugs that can benefit our pets as well as people.

It’s a sad fact that our beloved pets do not live as long as we wish that they could, and now more than ever, there are more options and therapies that can be tried in order to save our pets that have been diagnosed with cancer. Veterinarians and cancer researchers can evaluate new therapies, and potentially provide hope for our pets and families that are devastated when a loved one has been diagnosed with cancer.

Diagnosed with cancer ten years ago, twelve year old Jodie is a cancer survivor!

So back to the walk…It was a beautiful day in Denver with more than 200 people in attendance. Over $10,000 was raised for the Animal Cancer Foundation to further support comparative oncology, bringing us steps closer to one day finding a cure for cancer!
